PORN PRODUCTION HOUSES I LOVE
I’m often asked where to find “good” porn, and it mostly in tandem with where to find “ethical” or “feminist” porn. Vex Ashley from Four Chambers, wrote a great piece about how these terms are often highly subjective and often used as jargon for advertising. I recommend you read her piece, Transparency.
This list is focused more on diverse porn and identities that aren’t often represented or witnessed in “mainstream porn” on tube sites. So often we equate porn with very specific bodies, sexualities, positions, races, abilities, and scenes. Which is fucked up. Yet porn is and can be as diverse as any pleasure, bodies or identities. Porn is literally just watching anyone exploring any type of pleasure.
I believe we need to aware of how the media that we consume can shape our beliefs and values, while also allowing your fantasyscape to be a place that allows exploration and desire. It’s definitely a “yes and” situation! So I think it is important to find diverse and representational porn to broaden our desire and realised choices. We all deserve to access porn that represents us and our current or potential desires!
So this list is born out of the many porn screenings in 2017 and 2018 in Australia and USA where I screened many indie production houses. Mostly focused on production houses and films that have more diverse representation and are erotic, arty, sensual, queer, kinky, and experimental. Here are the ones that I like and recommend the most to clients.
Also, I encourage you to find your edge and share this article like you would any other media you get excited about. Talking about sex is radical in a sexual shame society!
SUPPORTING SEX WORKERS, PERFORMERS, AND INDIE PRODUCTION HOUSES:
Ok, so first and foremost. Porn is watching people at work, sex work is real work. This is something I remind middle schoolers when I teach them about porn and pleasure, and you can nearly hear their heads explode. It is often not educational, but it is always created for entertainment.
Many people don’t realise when they are consuming porn for free of tube sites that they are undermining the value and livelihood of performers and production houses. Our entitlement to free porn is robbing us of quality productions in the future.
So in short: PAY FOR YOUR PORN.
It is a workers rights issue, and a production quality issue.
On top of that, I’m so angry and devastated to see the further changes in social media censorship under SESTA FOSTA Act in 2017 and then the EARN IT Act in 2020. Sex workers are the caregivers of society, and now they have to do EVEN MORE invisible labour just to currently exist in their profession, be visible, and market their work. This systematic erasure harms everyone.
I mourn their right to be heard, to take up space, their safety, a secure way to promote their work, and their right to be celebrated.
So this blog is a small act of lifting up their work, and celebrating them, and giving you a chance to pay them money so they can thrive!
MY RECOMMENDED PRODUCTION HOUSES:
FOUR CHAMBERS / @fourchambers: I love their work so much, their films are absolute sensual artworks and also fucking weird at times. To deep dive, check out my interview with Vex Ashley, one of the founders. Also, Vex Ashley who runs Four Chambers has an amazing Only Fans which I highly recommend.
CRASHPAD / @crashpadseries: They film in The San Francisco Bay Area, and are a cultural queer institution. They feature such a diverse range of people, bodies, and kinks. They shoot performers who have existing relationships and chemistry and don’t edit out all the real moments which I looove. I interviewed the creator and director, Shine Louise Houston. Read my interview here.
AORTA FILMS / @aortafilmswillneverdie: This queer kinky experimental art performance production house includes and features many performers I admire, and they always look like they’re having so much fun! Never too straight-faced (ha) and serious. They also host workshops. So rad.
CUTENON FILMS / @cutenonfilms: This small newish production house out of Berlin steals my heart. I love their very creative, kinky, often food-focused, and pop colour films. Their work is so original, weird, hot, queer, and kinky.
ROYAL FETISH FILMS / @jetsetjasmine + @therealkingnoire: This fetish focused production house is Black-owned and run by Jetsetting Jasmine and King Noire, a couple who are all-round INCREDIBLE, read my article with them here. I highly recommend their Sacred Sex film, which is a maternity shoot with one of the creators Jetsetting Jasmine.
NOEL ALEJANDRO / @noelalejandrox: Noel describes his work as ‘gay erotica’. They are beautiful cinematic and beautifully scripted. I would like to check out even more of Noel’s work, but I’ve also heard great things from many.
DIPSEA / @dipseastories: they are the best in sexy audio stories. The stories are submitted by writers and real people and then produced into high-quality stories and accessed through an app or website with an annual membership. They are focused mostly on women and femmes but are slowly expanding.
CINEMA JOY / @cinemajoyfilms: this has been suggested by a reader but I haven’t checked them out yet. It seems it is run by one person and then some of the films are made by different curated directors, and centre queer people.
BRIGHT DESIRE / @brightdesirecom: This is another reader suggestion! I know of this production house but haven’t checked out their work, but they describe themselves as ‘Smart porn for women, for men, for everyone. Real-life couples, artistic and sensual erotica.’
USER-GENERATED OR AMATEUR CONTENT SITES:
These aren’t technically production houses, but I’m a big supporter of buying directly from users. I don’t support tube sites as they exploit indie production houses and the whole industry.
PINKLABEL.TV / @pinklabeltv - a host for emerging and indie filmmakers
HUMP! FILM FESTIVAL / @humpfilmfest - Submission-led, amateur, full range of experiences. HUMP! Is normally an in-person festival, but is streaming worldwide until March 6th 2021.
Do you have suggestions for production houses that should be on this list? Email me through the contact page and I’ll check them out and possibly add them!
NOTE: I used to screen and support Erika Lust, XConfessions, Lust Cinema, and Else Cinema. However, I’ve been super disappointed in the way they handled sexual assault and consent violations of performer Hello Rooster, on set. Read more here.
NOTE: I’m not getting commission from any of these production houses, but I am from the interview links for Spectrum Boutique. I only partner with companies I feel and believe are values aligned and awesome.
